I’m not too fond of social media. I wouldn’t say I like the effects it has on people. I still use it to share my work and to look at my favorite writers. I am also a considerable Reddit user, and on Reddit, I see users discuss how harmful social media has been to them. The common consensus was they felt as if their lives were horrible compared to other people. The users feel as if they are not doing enough and that they are just straight losers. I do not fault them for feeling that way. We have all felt that way. However, they cannot stop going on social media because it is addictive. I guess what I am trying to say is if you know Social Media makes you feel bad about yourself, and it leads you to compare yourself, why not control what you see on there?

I can tolerate people using social media; I will not tolerate people continually comparing themselves over and over. I want better for my peers. If you resonate with this, then I have some solutions for you.

Follow positive pages
Follow pages that make you feel good and ones that represent your interests. is there a writer you love that makes you feel good? Are you looking for pages with tips to help you be happier? Is there a motivational speaker you love? Look for those kinds of pages. I guarantee you will look forward to being on social media and learn new tips and tricks to enhance your life along the way.

Block or limit posts
If you see a post, you do not like hit the block button or limit the posts you see from a person. Blocking and limiting will clean your feed up as well. Keeping the toxicity on your social feeds will make your feed stink (not literally). If you know the trash stinks, do you keep it in your house? Apply that same philosophy to your feed.

Sign off immediately
If you do encounter a post that makes you feel unworthy, sign off. Now, since I know social media is addictive. I know how hard this could be, but only time yourself for 5 minutes, then hop back on. While you are signed off pick up another hobby that would take your mind off of the negativity. You can journal, go for a walk, or soak in the sun. If you could stay off longer, that will be great. Using this method will lead you to the habit of abandoning things that do not serve you a greater purpose.

I am worried about society and the harmful effects of the social media world. I plan to study this phenomenon more, and before you ask or wonder, yes, I have seen the Social Dilemma. Also, people have been saying those things mentioned in the documentary for years. I know it is way more profound than that. It is now time to develop a solution to the social media and self-esteem problem we have known for years.

A simple google search can also show you how many people are attempting to combat this problem. This article was a start. Give me a few years, and I will have solutions.
